Employee Verifications, Illinois-Style

April 29th, 2008

Illinois employers could soon be the federal government’s E-Verify and other online employee verification systems to check into the legal status of those they are considering hiring.

Recently a unanimous state senate vote passed Senate Bill 1878, which stands to lift the prior year’s ban on using these programs. The repeal bill states directly that businesses are no longer “prohibited” from using these employee verification systems. Now they are only “discouraged” from doing so until the kinks in the E-Verify are worked out and the program is functioning at a 99 percent accuracy rate. Some believe this to be a response to a federal lawsuit filed last summer by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Healthcare Job Search

April 17th, 2008

It’s no secret that job growth in 2008 did not get off to the best possible start. Talk of a national recession driven by high gas prices and poor real estate sales has caused employers in many industries to either have to lay off many workers or hire new ones at a slower rate. But while many other industries are suffering, the health care job is still in abundance.

Despite the current employment situation, approximately 3 million new healthcare jobs are expected to be created by 2016, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This projected job growth is higher than that of any other industry. As of 2006, over 14 million US citizens held jobs in health care, 438,000 of which were self-employed.

In an industry summary the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that of the 20 fastest growing occupations in the nation, 7 of them are healthcare related. Since most workers in this industry have jobs that require less than a 4 year college degree, the education necessary to have a career in healthcare is easily obtainable. Throughout this sector the most educated workers usually work in diagnosing and treating patients.

Since the healthcare industry continues to be extremely varied, one is not limited to one type of working environment. Approximately 85 percent of those who do not work in hospitals have jobs in establishments that employ less than 20 individuals. On the other hand, over 70 percent of those that do work in hospitals are employed by institutions that have at least 1,000 workers. This means that if one does not feel they can handle the stress of a crowded medical facility then they always have to option of working in a more personal setting.

In 2006, 19 percent of those with jobs in healthcare were part-time workers. Considering the occurrence of positions that require fewer hours and the fact that many health care facilities are open 24 hours a day, there are positions that can fit into any schedule.

Finding $100K Jobs

February 2nd, 2008

Creating a resume for an executive job takes more finesse than one needed to be, say, and administrative assistant. Companies that are willing to pay an employee six figures are looking for the best of the best, therefore the resume used to make it obvious that the applicant belongs in this group.

That being said, providing too much information can cause an employer to miss out on the important parts. Lack of white space can cause the document to look too busy and undermine appearing professional. Because of this, it is important to use a format that directs the eye toward the most crucial achievements of one’s career.

In order to ensure that employers do not miss out on the most impressive points listed on the resume, scrap the objective statement. Instead use this space for to highlight the best achievements that have been reached throughout one’s career. This may not be as simple as it seems, due to the fact that those who qualify for executive level jobs certainly have a long list of successes. Despite the abundance of things that could be mentioned in this area, it is important to keep it short.

January 16th, 2008

Despite the fact that the number of first time unemployment benefit claimants rose , Georgia’s jobless rate dropped in the month of November from 4.7 percent to 4.2 percent, according to the Georgia Department of Labor. The 16 percent increase partially resulted from seasonal layoffs in the manufacturing industries. DOL statistics said that 48,150 initials filed first-time claims, which is 1.4 percent more than the previous year. The number of claims in Atlanta rose 3.4 percent, going from 17,044 individuals to 17,632 between October and November. Also, during this time frame, 12,600 Georgia jobs were created.

Travelport, one of the world’s largest airline reservation companies, will soon add 300 new jobs in Atlanta. The company purchased Georgia-based Worldspan in August of 2007, planning to use it’s location at 300 Galleria Parkway as its North American global distribution system headquarters Approximately 200 of these new jobs will be located there, which are made possible by the company’s consolidation of their operations in Rosemont, Ill., Parsippany, N.J, and Denver. The additional 100 jobs in Atlanta to be provided by Travelport will come when the company expands its data center. Overall, Travelport plans to invest some where around $33 million in the Atlanta area.

Governor Sonney Pardue said that “Travelport’s decision to locate a division headquarters in Atlanta signals that our position as a hub in the travel and IT industries is second to none.” He went on to say that “The addition of these high paying jobs will provide more opportunities for Georgia’s best and brightest to stay in the state and continue to grow our economy.”

This decision, and the Atlanta jobs created as a result, was likely effected by the success of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, which has had the title of the nation’s busiest airport in terms of flights for three years.

Travelport handles travel reservations no only for airlines, but also for hotels, car rental companies, cruise lines and rail operators. The company provides service to both on-line and off0;ine travel agencies in more than 145 countries, along with running a large portion of the internal reservations and related systems used by airlines such as Delta Air Lines, Inc.

Fox Helps Drive Houston Economy

December 13th, 2007

Houston, Texas, a city which already has a low unemployment rate of 3.8 percent, will soon have even more new jobs in Houston to offer qualified residents. Scheduled to open in the first quarter of 2008, Fox News‘ brand-new facility will be a welcomed addition to the area’s job market.

According to the Chronicle, an area newspaper, a large portion of these new Houston jobs will be “highly paid technical jobs.” Ron Bourbeau, the CEO of the South Montgomery County Economic Development Partnership, says that such a large addition of new Houston jobs “says something about the economic viability of this community.”

Fox bought the site of their new facility in spring of 2006 with the goal of creating a center for Fox Network Center-Houston to transmit broadcasts via cable and satellite throughout country. The facility will be a master control for two of the Fox owned networks, FSN Houston and FSN Southwest.

Located on Research Forest Drive south of Technology Forest Drive, the center will also be a hub for other Fox networks, according to Tim Sweeney, senior vice president of general manger of Fox Network Center-Houston. “It is like Grand Central Station for these arriving entities,” Sweeney went on to say, referring to the center as a “behind-the-scenes facility”. At this time no studio is planned for this location, although 30 acres of the site have been set aside for future expansions to be used as other needs are identified.

When the center opens it will create approximately 400 Houston jobs, according to Sweeney. He followed this by saying that the workforce will increase as the facility grows. As to why Fox chose The Woodlands for it’s Houston Hub, he said that the decision was made due to the “wonderful base for the possibility of employees for the future.” Employees who specialize in everything from technical monitoring to date processing to management will be needed to run to site.

There has been talk of opening the facility, which is has a guarded gate entrance that is monitored 24 hours a day, to students and other who are interested in pursuing careers with Fox. This means that, aside from a large number of new Houston jobs, there will likely be internship opportunities for area college students.

Finding Jobs Via Facebook

December 5th, 2007

With the addition job search tools to social networking site Facebook, it’s apparent that recruiters are trying to reach soon to be and recent college graduates. For the most part, these applicants operate in a fairly similar way to job search engines.

The main difference is that Facebook’s job search tools enable members to have a frequently updated list of position openings uploaded to their profiles and main pages. This eliminates the need for members to use external job search websites.
