Arizona Manufacturing Jobs Lost to California

What could have been new Arizona manufacturing jobs are now going to California.

Scottsdale-based Kyocera Solar Inc. recently announced that it will open a new factory in San Diego despite statewide efforts to create incentives and attract alternative-energy companies to Arizona.

Kyocera Solar Inc. is a subsidiary of Kyoto, Japan-based Kyocera Corporation, which currently has about 4,000 American employees. The company has solar-panel factories in Japan, China, the Czech Republic, and Tijuana, Mexico.

Manufacturing Jobs Pittsburgh Lost Over the Year Amount to 9.4 Percent

As overall employment in the city declined at the end of last year, the number of manufacturing jobs Pittsburgh lost was higher than any other industry.

Although the Pittsburgh unemployment rate for December 2009 has not yet been released, Pennsylvania’s rate increased from 8.5 percent to 8.9 percent, which is still lower than the national rate of 10 percent. Pittsburgh had a 7.5 percent unemployment rate during November.

The city had a total non-farm employment of 1,123,100 workers during December, according to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is down from 1,128,300 workers during November and a 2 percent decrease from December 2008.
