As more jobs were lost on a monthly and yearly basis and the area’s unemployment rate continued to climb, Milwaukee construction jobs saw the biggest yearly decline in employment.
During January, the Milwaukee area’s unemployment rate increased from 8.6 percent to 9.6 percent, following an increase from 8.4 percent during December 2009. The most recent increase places the area’s rate just below the national unemployment rate of 9.7 percent.
The Milwaukee-Waukesha-West Allis area had a total non-farm employment of 781,600 workers during January, according to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is down from 799,000 workers during December and a 4.8 percent decrease from last year.
