Nevada Nursing Jobs Should Come Easy for UNLV Students

Students at one local school should be well-prepared for Nevada nursing jobs.

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas School of Nursing recently announced that 100 percent of its students passed the National Certification Licensure Examination during Q4 2009.

“The licensure exam is an important way to evaluate how effectively we’re preparing our students to enter the nursing workforce,” Dean Carolyn Yucha told The Rebel Yell. “We’re pleased that a record number of our students are graduating at a high level and are ready to meet the evolving healthcare needs of Nevadans.”

The 100-percent pass rate is an increase from the 84.7 percent of students who passed the licensure exam during 2008 and is 7 percent higher than the national average. Throughout all of 2009, 90.6 percent of the school’s nursing students passed the exam and only seven first-time test-takers failed.

The community has lauded both the school’s faculty and students for the achievement. School officials hope the nursing program’s success will help bring in more students during the coming years.

Although faculty members play an important role in the nursing program, a lot of hard work and dedication is expected from students themselves. The UNLV School of Nursing Web site notes that students must be “grounded in professional values, ethical behaviors and concepts of patient-centered care.”

The school’s current curriculum also stresses the importance of preparing students to become leaders in the healthcare industry. However, the school is in the midst of changing its curriculum to have an even greater focus on patient care and safety.
