The healthcare industry is one of the most popular and most stable in the nation, not to mention one of the very few industries that has managed to thrive, despite the economic downturn. If you’re looking for a career in healthcare, one of the best places to work is in a hospital.

The healthcare occupations found within a hospital include everything from physicians to nurses, all of whom are responsible for providing medical, diagnostic and treatment services. Hospitals mainly cater to inpatients, but also provide outpatient services as a secondary activity.

Colorado’s education and health services industry employed 261,000 workers during December 2009, according to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is the same as during November, but a 2.5 percent increase from December 2008.

According to the Colorado Department of Labor & Employment, there were 132 establishments and 77,889 employees within the state’s hospital subsector during Q4 2008. All but one of the top 10 occupations within the hospital subsector are considered to be in demand.

Overall, the industry is expected to increase by 23.7 percent during that 10-year period, which is much higher than the 6.5 percent growth rate predicted for all industries.

Aside from great growth potential, hospital employees in Colorado can expect to be paid well. During Q4 2008, the average pay for a hospital employee in the state was $24.03 per hour, $961 per week or $49,972 per year.
