Anyone considering San Diego nurse jobs should look into getting an education at San Diego State University.
The healthcare industry is one of the few that has managed to thrive, despite the economic recession. In addition, nursing specifically is still considered one of the most in-demand occupations. However, it’s important to obtain the proper education and training before applying for a nurse job.
The San Diego State University School of Nursing at the College of Health & Human Services has been ranked among the top 100 nursing schools in the country. The school offers three degrees, including one bachelor degree and two masters degrees.
San Diego State University itself is a large, four-year public university. The school currently has an enrollment of about 35,000 students, including 28,000 undergraduate students.
The programs at the School of Nursing are accredited by the California Board of Registered Nursing. The school houses three laboratories for students, including a seven-bed hospital where students undergo a simulated clinical
The degrees offered by the School of Nursing, according to Education-Portal.com, include:
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing – This four-year program prepares students to obtain their license as a registered nurse. Students are expected to take courses in science, math, humanities and communications.
Lower-level courses include: informatics, client assessment, fundamentals of nursing practice and pathophysiology. Higher-level courses include: nursing care of acutely ill patients, clinical pharmacology, adult health nursing, pediatric nursing, gerontological nursing, electrocardiography, community health nursing, nursing management, and leadership and primary health care nursing.
- Master of Science in Nursing – Advanced Practice Nursing – This degree, which requires 52 credits for graduation, can be completed in two or three years. Applicants are required to have a nursing degree and it is recommend students have three years of experience.
Subjects students will study include: theoretical and research bases of nursing, information systems for nursing, advanced health assessment and health promotion, pathophysiology, clinical pharmacology and advanced practice nursing.
- Master of Science in Nursing – Nursing Systems Administration – This degree can be completed in five, seven, eight or nine semesters. A thesis or comprehensive exam is required for graduation. Graduates will be prepared to work as middle or executive-level nursing administrators or to move on to doctoral studies.
Students will be expected to take courses on information systems for nursing, health economics, financing health systems and services foundations.
