Manufacturing Jobs Pittsburgh Lost Over the Year Amount to 9.4 Percent

As overall employment in the city declined at the end of last year, the number of manufacturing jobs Pittsburgh lost was higher than any other industry.

Although the Pittsburgh unemployment rate for December 2009 has not yet been released, Pennsylvania’s rate increased from 8.5 percent to 8.9 percent, which is still lower than the national rate of 10 percent. Pittsburgh had a 7.5 percent unemployment rate during November.

The city had a total non-farm employment of 1,123,100 workers during December, according to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is down from 1,128,300 workers during November and a 2 percent decrease from December 2008.

Only three industries managed to see a monthly increase in employment, including: trade, transportation and utilities by 2,400 jobs; information by 100 jobs; and other services by 200 jobs. Employment in the manufacturing industry remained even over the month with 87,600 jobs.

A mere two industries saw a yearly increase in employment. The education and health services industry employed 237,100 workers during December, down from 238,000 workers during November, but a .7 percent increase from December 2008.

The leisure and hospitality industry employed 100,600 workers during December, down from 101,800 workers during November, but a .8 percent increase from the previous year. Employment in the mining and logging industry remained even over the year with 5,400 jobs.

The manufacturing industry took the biggest hit when compared to the previous year, losing 9.4 percent of its workforce from December 2008 to December 2009.
