There are many opportunities for those looking for Portland education jobs.
The education industry, along with healthcare, is one of the few throughout the country that has continued to add jobs despite the current economic recession. The education industry in Portland is no different as it has seen a monthly and yearly increase in employment.
The Portland-Vancouver-Beaverton area’s education and health services industry employed 137,100 workers during October, according to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is up from 134,100 workers during September and a .6 percent increase from last year.
When it comes to primary and secondary education, Portland is home to several private schools. The city also is served by six public school districts, including Parkrose, David Douglas, Centennial, Reynolds, Riverdale and Portland Public, which is the largest in the area.
The Portland Public School District includes about 100 schools that cover various combinations of kindergarten through 12th grade and 50 special education programs. The district has about 53,000 students, accounting for enrollment of more than 90 percent of available children.
There are three main public colleges and universities throughout the Portland area. Portland State University is the largest university in the State of Oregon with an overall graduate and undergraduate enrollment of more than 26,000 students.
Portland also is home to Oregon Health and Science University, which includes medical, nursing and dental divisions. Portland Community College is comprised of the school’s Cascade and Sylvania campuses, as well as the Southeast Center and Metropolitan Workforce Training Center. The college’s Rock Creek campus is located outside of Portland.
Portland also is home to many private colleges and universities, including: Cascade College, Concordia University, Lewis & Clark College, Linfield College, Multnomah Bible College and Biblical Seminary, Pacific Northwest College of Art, University of Portland, Reed College and Warner Pacific College.
For those looking to work in colleges that specialize in specific majors, Portland has plenty to choose from. As far as healthcare, OHSU is home to a major medical, dental and nursing school, which neighbors a medical district that is surrounded by a Veterans Affairs hospital, Portland Shriners Hospital and Doernbecher Children’s Hospital.
If you’re more interested in teaching at an alternative medical school, Portland is home to the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine, the National College of Natural Medicine and Western States Chiropractic College.
The only law school in Portland is Lewis & Clark Law School, which is affiliated with Lewis & Clark College. Art schools in the city include the Art Institute of Portland, Pacific Northwest College of Art, Oregon College of Art and Craft and Northwest Film Center. The Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts also is located in Portland.
