If you’re one of the many considering Nashville medical jobs, you should know the city has a lot to offer in terms of healthcare.

The Nashville-Davidson-Murfreesboro-Franklin area’s education and health services industry employed 112,200 workers during September, according to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is up from 111,700 workers during August and a .6 percent increase from last year.

The City of Nashville is home to more than 350 healthcare companies. More than 2,700 doctors work in the city’s 30 hospitals, medical centers and specialty centers.

Perhaps the most well-known hospital in Nashville is the Vanderbilt University Medical Center, which is part of Vanderbilt University. The main 658-bed hospital has modern surgical units, a labor and delivery area, a comprehensive burn center and a coronary care wing.

The Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, which is housed within a separate eight-floor facility, offers comprehensive pediatric care and 19 specialty services. According to an article by City-Data.com, Vanderbilt University also operates “Life Flight,” a helicopter ambulance service for patients that need immediate help.

Baptist Hospital is the largest not-for profit medical center in the Nashville area. The hospital, which has 685 beds, offers a number of specialty units, including the Mandrell Heart Center, Institute for Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery and the Sports Medicine Center. Nashville also is home to Saint Thomas Hospital, a 515-bed hospital founded by the Daughters of Charity that is nationally recognized for its heart and cancer units.

HCA Inc., which is headquartered in Nashville, manages 191 hospitals and 82 outpatient surgery centers throughout England, Switzerland and the United States, including Nashville’s Centennial, Skyline and Southern Hills medical centers.

Centennial Medical Center is known for its cardiology, stroke, orthopedics and breast cancer management wok. The center’s campus includes the Women’s Hospital at Centennial and the Parthenon Pavilion, which is a full-service mental health center.

Skyline Medical Center has operated a 59-acre campus close to downtown Nashville since 2000. The center is known for its treatment of stroke, back surgery, neck surgery and spinal fusion patients. Southern Hills Medical Center operates a smaller, community hospital that provides heart, oncology, orthopedic and neurology services.

Other notable institutions in Nashville include Meharry Medical College, which is one of the most prestigious predominantly African American colleges that has been a leading producer of physicians and dentists since 1876. There also are two Department of Veterans Affairs medical centers in the city.
