There are more job openings in Tampa Florida than in any other major city throughout the state.
A recent report from Juju.com ranked the job markets of 50 major cities by comparing available jobs to online job advertisements. Tampa was ranked 20th, placing it better than any major metro area in Florida and better than most other metro areas in the country.
Tampa’s ranking is somewhat surprising, given that the city’s economy has continued to decline. During September, the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater area saw its unemployment rate increase from 11.4 percent to 11.7 percent, which was higher than the national unemployment rate at the time of 9.8 percent.
The area had a total non-farm employment of 1,161,700 workers during September, according to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is down from 1,162,200 workers during August and a 4.5 percent decrease from last year.
The Juju.com report ranked Washington, D.C. first, with two people per advertised job. On the other end of the scale, Detroit was ranked last, with 21 job seekers per available job. Miami also was low on the list, coming in at 48th, with 15.2 job seekers per online ad.
In order to form the list, Juju used an index of online job postings from thousands of job boards, recruiting firms and employer Web sites. However, the list does not take into account the quality of available jobs or jobs that are not posted online.
In addition, the report does not consider that the unemployment used in calculations only reflects part of the population that may respond to a job ad. The country’s current unemployment rate of 10.2 percent does not include part-time employees looking for full-time work or discouraged job seekers who have stopped searching for work. If those groups were included, it is estimated the unemployment rate would be at 17.5 percent.
