St Louis nursing jobs have a lot to offer if you’re looking for a healthcare career in Missouri.

The healthcare and social assistance sector has increased from accounting for 10 percent of Missouri’s employment during 1990 to accounting for 12 percent of the state’s employment during 2006. During that time period, the sector added 97,000 new jobs throughout the state, according to the Missouri Economic Research and Information Center.

Nursing jobs in particular have been a strong driver of healthcare growth throughout Missouri. Between 2000 and 2004, nursing positions accounted for more than 11 percent of the total job growth in the healthcare sector, with more than 2,000 nursing jobs created during that period.

Nursing jobs currently account for 51.2 percent of all healthcare employment in Missouri, followed by allied health positions at 22.5 percent, miscellaneous positions at 12.3 percent, physicians positions at 8.4 percent and pharmacy positions at 5.7 percent.

The healthcare industry is expected to add more than 23,000 nursing jobs through 2014, which would make for a 10-year increase of almost 20 percent. The jobs to be created will include 23,408 growth openings, which are simply new jobs, and 21,062 replacement openings, which are vacancies created by other workers quitting or retiring.

Positions for registered nurses, which is one of the fastest-growing occupations in the nursing sector, are expected to increase by 22 percent through 2014. Registered nurses receive an average wage of about $23.18 per hour, which is considered above average.

Registered nurse is the most popular healthcare job in Missouri, followed by nursing aides, orderlies and attendants; licensed practical and licensed vocational nurses; emergency medical technicians and paramedics; psychiatric aides; and physician assistants.

It is expected that by 2014, more than 61 percent of workers with nursing careers will be in positions that require post-secondary vocational training. In addition, about 56 percent of nurses will need skills usually obtained by earning a professional degree.

There are currently about 90 training providers and educational institutions that offer nursing training programs. Although 20 percent of these are located in Kansas City and St. Louis, the rest can be found in smaller metropolitan areas throughout the state.
