Construction Jobs in Houston Decline

The number of construction jobs in Houston lost during the last year placed the area in the middle of nationwide city rankings for construction job declines.

The Associated General Contractors of America recently released a report that found the Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown area lost 21,600 construction jobs, or 11 percent, from August 2008 to August of this year. Houston ranked 145th out of the 337 metro areas listed. Of those areas, 324 saw a decline in construction jobs.

Throughout Texas as a whole, 121,000 construction, mining and logging jobs were lost during the last year. About 89,100 construction jobs added to the 13 percent decline.

The AGC, which is based in Virginia, released the report in order to highlight the decline of construction jobs and persuade Congress to take action to further stimulate the industry. The AGC has proposed that Congress repeal the alternative minimum tax while increasing and extending a series of tax credits and cuts to increase investments in real estate development.

“The problems facing the construction industry aren’t just devastating construction workers, they are crippling our broader economy,” CEO Stephen Sandherr told the Houston Business Journal.

During August, the area’s construction industry employed 183,400 workers, according to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is down from 184,700 workers during July and a 10.5 percent decrease from last year.

As a whole, Texas’s construction industry employed 581,700 workers during August, which is down from 593,400 workers during July and a 13.7 percent decrease from last year.
