Western Australia Jobs

The mining industry has continued to provide a significant number of Western Australia jobs.

With China purchasing ore almost as quickly as it can be extricated from the ground, there is no end in sight to the number of new positions this sector will bring. This year alone, the country has promised to buy up to 55 million tons of Australian ore. Industry experts expect this amount to increase annually for many years to come.

James Wilson, a mining analyst with DJ Carmichael & Co., believes that the success of the mines is relatively uncomplicated.

“China needs the ore and Australia’s got it, it’s that simple,” he said.

Jobs at the mines are not as easy as Wilson’s explanation. Employees often work 12 hour shifts with only one day off a week. Temperatures can get as high as 43 degrees Celsius (110 degrees Fahrenheit). Still, the mines constantly attract new workers due to the amount of money being offered.

“People looking for work know they are going to forfeit some of the conveniences of the cities, but you can’t make the money there that you can here,” Andrea Ling, recruitment consultant with Chandler Ling, said. “If we can’t guarantee top dollar, people just won’t show up for work. They know they can go elsewhere and get hired in a second.”

New employees usually start out making around 83,000 Australian dollars ($78,500 US) a year. On top of this, most workers are given company-subsidized rent. Since the hours can be grueling, it is normal for employees to receive one full week off a month along with transportation to and from their home towns on either a company plane or commercial flight.

The mining industry has also created jobs in Western Australia indirectly. Positions range in everything from truck drivers that transport loads of ore to cooks. Even the fishing industry has been boosted by the sheer number of hungry miners.
