The nationally experienced recession is taking a toll on the number of job listings posted online, according to Monster Worldwide’s most recent Employment Index. According to this study, online job based demand fell by 7 points in November, meaning that it has decreased by 22 percent since the same time in 2007.
By reviewing millions of different job listings online, Monster found that the demand for those searching for positions in public administration is still strongest, but signs are beginning to point to this being short lived. Since many businesses have had to tighten their belts, professional, scientific and technical services have all registered a significant decline.
Due to the holiday season, food preparation and serving saw a slight increase in job listings. Although this shows that many hotels and restaurants had a need for more staff during this time of the year, the demand was not as great as it usually would be.
The only industries that saw a real increase in the number of job listings posted were farming, fishing and forestry and healthcare. The last continues to be strong, despite the recession, because of the fact that the services it provides are necessary for life.
Throughout out the country the decline in jobs posted online was mostly universal, showing that the economic strife is something we are all experiencing. The West South Central region did manage to fair better than all other areas, but even it has taken a hit.
Out of all of the top 28 local markets monitored by Monster Worldwide, only Orlando managed to report an increase in the number of job listings posted online. Aside from that, every other major metro city that the company tracks showed a significant decrease when compared to last year.
Jobs posted online may continue to decline for sometime before recovering, due to the economic problems the country is experiencing as a whole. Many experts believe that it will be sometime between 2011 and 2012 before the job market really begins to recover.
