Healthcare Jobs in Cleveland

A career in healthcare may be the way to go for those seeking jobs in Cleveland. While the city has one of the highest unemployment rates in the nation, it is home to some of the best healthcare sites, many who are struggling to fill positions needing qualified applicants for their jobs in healthcare.

According to the City of Cleveland, hospitals and related healthcare facilities are among the largest employers in northeast Ohio. Healthcare jobs employ more than 70,000 workers and pay more than $3.6 billion in wages and benefits. The city projects that 26.7 percent of job growth in the region over the next 10 years will be in healthcare occupations.


However, there are currently about 4,000 unfilled healthcare jobs in Cleveland. In April, the city’s Division of Workforce Development received a $2.5 million grant from the Department of Labor to address the critical shortage of healthcare workers.

“Cleveland is a major healthcare center of the world and the demand for healthcare workers keeps growing,” said Mayor Frank Jackson. “This grant is allowing us to build partnerships that will create career paths for the young people of Cleveland.”

As Cleveland is home to some of the most well-known and top-ranked health facilities in the country, those looking for healthcare jobs in Cleveland should have some luck.

The Cleveland Clinic, founded in 1921, has been ranked among the top three hospitals in America by U.S. News & World Report. The hospital has 1,600 salaried physicians representing 120 specialties and sub-specialties. The hospital saw 2.8 million outpatient visits in 2005 and about 70,000 hospital admissions. In addition to the main Cleveland location, the hospital has 14 family health and ambulatory surgery centers in surrounding communities, many community hospitals, and operates Cleveland Clinic Florida in Weston, Florida.

Cleveland also is home to MetroHealth, which employs more than 500 primary care and specialty care physicians. MetroHealth has been affiliated with Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine since 1914. The system is comprised of the major medical center, a rehabilitation hospital, two long-term care and skilled nursing centers, an outpatient surgery center and a network of community-based health centers.

The hospital boasts the region’s largest network of primary care physicians, outpatient centers and hospital.
