How to Create Your Own Video Resume

Okay, so you’ve researched resumes and stumbled across the fact that more and more people are creating a video one. You’ve weighed the pros and cons and have decided to make your own, but what should you do?

The first step is deciding whether you are going to make the video yourself, or if you’re going to use a professional service. To use a professional service you are looking at $100-400. Also, make sure you really research the company they should have a proven track record of success, and know how to make a professional video. They should also ask to see a copy of your resume.

If you decide to do your own, great; with technology at your fingertips, it’s amazing what you can now do. Most computers come with a webcam and software to make your own videos. Or use a digital camera.

Just make sure to make your video no longer than two to three minutes. Edit it well. Make sure you are dressed your best, in a suit. If you are a guy, look clean shaven and have your hair neatly styled (this may mean a haircut). If you are a girl, wear a suit also; wear minimal makeup, and not a lot of jewelry. Also have your hair pulled off your face, but you don’t have to have it up.

Make sure you have a person interviewing you. Only give professional information. Keep your answers short, but use examples of previous jobs. Do not use big hand gestures and keep your facial expressions to a minimum. Let your personality show through, but don’t be too casual. Again make sure you don’t talk too long, keep your answers to the point but be confident. Don’t be fidgety or play with your hair. Make good eye contact. And remember to be yourself. Employers are looking at these videos to see if you’ll make a good fit, so act yourself so they can gauge you properly.

If you follow these steps you’ll be on your way to a professional video resume.

Once you are done your editing, send your resume, with a link of your resume video to employers. You should get call backs, within a week or two.
